Name: Daniel Maidman

Medium: drawing and painting

Censored By: Instagram

When were you censored?: February, 2019

Was there notification of removal and, if so, what was the reason given?: The usual blurred image of the post, with the notification about not following guidelines.

Was there the opportunity to appeal? If so, did you appeal and what was the response?: I hit the “object” button. There was no response.

What, if any, were the consequences of the removal for you? Please give details.: I had the artist’s usual social media fear: I worked hard to meet my audience. I like them and they like me. The artist’s fear is of separation from one’s audience.

Other Comments: I am including here the version which I pre-censored and which was deleted nonetheless. After its deletion, Instagram went back and deleted all of my work-in-progress posts of the same painting, whether or not the particular post included material which, in a photograph, would have violated terms of use. It is worth noting that nudity in art is explicitly included in acceptable content under Instagram guidelines. It is infuriating that a contemporary artist must use the social media platforms in order to function in the art world, and yet the platforms show no consistency or transparency, and face no accountability.
