Artist: Lisa Rickard
Medium: Oil Painting and Graphite Drawing
Censored by: Instagram & Facebook
Date of censorship: May 2019
Was there notification of removal? If so, what was the reason given?
Yes, I was notified of removal – Instagram & Facebook said my images went against community guidelines.
Was there the opportunity to appeal? If so, did you appeal and what was the response?
No option to appeal on Instagram. I did appeal on Facebook. They admitted it was their error and I received notification that my post was reinstated. I checked my family and friends’ News Feeds, but it never reappeared – my images were consequently never seen by my online community.
What, if any, were the consequences of the removal for you?
Much emotional distress as now I feel like I have to cover the nipples every time I post my nude painting/drawings. I’m worried that being forced to censor my art won’t prevent deletion of my posts in the future. I am being prevented from promoting my work in its entirety with the visual impact that uncensored art is meant to convey to the viewer.
I also believe that part of my Instagram site is being blocked. When I used hashtags after Instagram deleted two of my posts, my images never appeared in the Hashtag Feeds, so I can’t use hashtags to promote my work.
