Artist: Savannah Spirit

Medium: Photography

Censored by: Facebook & Instagram

Date of censorship: Facebook, 2011 account taken down as well as multiple times. They would punish my account saying I couldn’t post for 30 days. It got to the point it was constant so I deleted my facebook account. Instagram, 2015-2020 account taken down multiple times and still having content deleted. I’m also shadowbanned.

Was there notification of removal? If so was a reason given?

Only notifications of removal when post is removed not the actual profile. The only reason given is that it goes against community standards.

Was there the opportunity to appeal? If so, did you appeal and what was the response?

Yes on my instagram profile but again, only when a post is taken down not when my profile was deleted. Their appeals process is vague and hard to find. Must be accessible. Usually the post is put back up but not always 100%

What, if any, were the consequences of the removal for you?

Every time my profile is wiped out I have to start all over again and rebuild my whole audience which takes years. It’s a blow to my business as an artist. It’s caused emotional turmoil and stress as well as kept me from selling my work through these platforms.

What was the response?

When accounts were deleted I had no response. You can’t find anyone to help you unless you know someone who may know someone… ridiculous.

Free speech and the artistic nude are still issues on social media outlets. Facebook and Instagram, especially instagram needs to stop threatening artists and other with account deletion. They should be working with artists to implement a better system.
