Alyssa Aleksanian

Medium: Oil painting

Censored by: Instagram

Was there a notification of removal or downranking, and if so what was the reason given?: Yes - inappropriate content.

My site is ONLY art. However I have had other comments removed citing ‘inappropriate’on other people’s sites (eg Very British Problems) that were innocently humorous in keeping with their sites. Eg I made a comment about a biscuit falling in a cup of tea - and wasn’t it disappointing. It’s as though the AI targeted me. It’s bizarre.

What date was your artwork removed or downranked?: April 18, 2024

Were you given an opportunity to appeal? If so, did you appeal, and if so, what was the response?: Was still deemed inappropriate after appeal despite being an art only site.

What consequences have you faced as a result of the downranking or removal? Please describe in detail: This is the year I stopped my job to focus full time on my art. So immense anxiety that a key part of my marketing plan is unreliable and intimidating. I’ve opened an X account and tumblr in response.

Please write any additional comments: Art should be absolutely free of censorship. If the arts can’t be a place of free speech , that’s the end of free speech in society anywhere. Art always is the mirror to a society. It’s crucial for society to evolve.
